| Roy Edward Hulsman 1935 or 1938 inTulsa |
Roy Edward Hulsman (son of EDWARD LOUIS HULSMAN and NELLIE GRATTON) was born 01 Aug 1908 in Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, and died 26 Jun 1945 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA34. He married Dorothy Louise Johnson.
Notes for Roy Edward Hulsman:
Roy is buried next to his mother, Nellie, at this cemetery. His half brother William Wayne Johnson, Nellie's son by her first marriage to William Johnson is buried on the other side of Nellie.
Lived with Uncle Ed and Maxine when they were married in 1939, while he trained to be an upholsterer.
Roy was an upholsterer in Los Angeles, California.
Roy was a bootlegger in the 1930's, and once was shot by the police when he was being chased in his car. They shot him through the car, through the seat into his left hip. (This from his nephew, Bob Palmer's personal memory of visiting Roy in the hospital)
Bob also remembers that as a young boy his parents were called one night and he accompanied his parents to Grandpa Henry Hulsman's house and Grandma Opal H. and Dan White's mother Opal Mae, and her brother, Buddy were at home. Uncle Cecil Mitchell answered the door covered in blood. Cecil told them the story that he and Roy had been drinking that night and decided together to "start a new life." (Roy Eugene Hulsman said they were going to work on the construction of a new dam.) The proceeded to jump a freight train and leave Tulsa behind. Cecil caught the ladder on theh freight car, and looked back to see if Roy did. He saw that Roy had slipped and the train wheel cut off one leg. Cecil jumped off the train, ran back to Roy and carried him to help. (Roy Eugene said the leg was initially cut off above the ankle, but "by the time they finished with it, it was above the knee.") Roy Eugene said that once he lost his leg, he really settled down, although "he was still drunk three or four days a week". Roy Eugene remembered being about eight years old with his Dad when they went to Missouri to pick up a load of bootleg booze, and Roy told Roy Eugene that he sold it to lawyers and judges in Tulsa. Roy Eugene said his mother told him that when he, Roy Eugene moved out of Roy's house to go live with his mother, that that is probably what killed Roy, as Roy Eugene was all Roy had left.
Roy had been estranged from his wife for a while. Roy's son, Gary, went to live with his mother and Roy Eugene stayed with Roy. Roy Eugene said that Roy had been beating the "s--t" out of his wife and she left him. One night when Roy Eugene was about 15, he came in late after walking home from Hollywood, and Roy met him when he came in. Roy Eugene said that Roy "scared the s--t out of me", and he then moved in with his mother. But, he went to his same school and would come back on weekends to see his friends, and stay with Roy. Roy Eugene said his mother told him that when he, Roy Eugene moved out of Roy's house to go live with his mother, that that is probably what killed Roy, as Roy Eugene was all Roy had left. (These stories from an email from Bob Palmer , Mary Louise Hulsman Palmer's son dated 22 Jun 2007, and from a phone call between Dan White and Roy Eugene Hulsman, 30 Sep 2007.)
