JAMES BEARD KERR (b. 13 Sep 1830, d. 25 Jan 1866)
JAMES BEARD KERR (son of ROBERT KERR and HANNAH MARIAH COCHRAN) was born 13 Sep 1830 in Giles County, TN, and died 25 Jan 1866 in Litchfield, IL. He married HANNAH LUCKEY FULLERTON, daughter of JAMES ROBERT FULLERTON and ANNA ADAMS.
Notes for JAMES BEARD KERR:
Came to Pleasant Hope, MO possibly from TN by wagon and ox team with several other families. During Civil War, he tried to join Army, but was told he could do more good running the mill to keep flour and meal for the women and children. He would hide from the soldiers so they woldn't kill him. One day they caught up with him, and tookhim with them, and told his wife, Hannah, they were going to kill him. They went a short distance, stood him up by a tree, and they all took a shot at him. He fell and the soldiers turned their horses and left as fast as they could. Hannah saw it all, and ran to him thinking they had killed him. He told her to let him lie there, that he was only shot in the arm. He said that if they saw him get up, they'd come back and finish the job. He waited until they were gone, and the soldiers never came back. ( I don't know if they wer Rebels or Yankees).(This story was from a letter by Nell Page, daughter of Anna and Richard Rowden, dated 18 Jan 1952) They heard the big guns of Wilson Creek Battle, and that night son John was born, thus his middle name of Wilson. James bought and sold horses and mules, driving them to TN or IL to sell. The last big herd he sold for thousands of dollars in confederate money. Of course, it became worthless. He was broken up by that. He loaded the family and went to Illinois in a wagon train. They hadn't been in IL very long when he took sick and died. Hannah's brothers loaded the wagons and little baby Mariah (Aunt Moga), and moved back to Pleasant Hope, MO. He is buried in Litchfield, IL. He was buried by the river, in a graveyard. He had been a high degree Mason, possbly 32nd degree or Shriner.
