Notes for Ronald Earl Whipple:
Ronald was born on September 20, 1927. He was the third child of Mildred and Lee Whipple. He was just under two years younger than his twin brothers, Hugh and Milton. He referred to the three of them as "we three twins" according to his mother. Because he was often compared to the twins by teachers, he was moved from Maplewood Elementary School to Walter French School. Ron was a very good athlete and excelled in football. He was evidently offered a scholarship to the U of M following a very good career at Eastern HS in Lansing, Michigan. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend the U of M due to getting married. He graduated Eastern HS in January of 1946, just missing the "opportunity" to serve his country in the second world war. He worked at American Drycleaners as a presser and driver. He was hired at Oldsmobile were as an employee, he was involved in an industrial accident which caused him to lose the four fingers of his left hand from the second knuckle. He and wife Doris lived on Indiana St. on the East side of Lansing, with infant son Jeffrey Lynn. Daughter Christine was born and all four of them lived in the very small home. They were the first members of the family to own a television. Ron's parents, who were huge fans of the Detroit Redwings would often come to the home in the evening to watch the games. Jeff can remember these visits and and distinctly remebers his grandmother standing to "look" down into the corner of the television to find the puck and skaters, a lesson in futility as the games were televised with a stationery camera back then. Ron and Doris had a home built at 527 W. Holmes Rd. on the south end of town, moving into the home in the autumn of 1951. This was the only new home that Ron ever owned and was the home he was still living in at the time of his death in 1972. Ron was a dedicated hard working employee of the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors. He was working skilled trades at the time of his accident, (happened the same night as the infamous fire at the Lewis T. Cass building owned by the State of Michigan), then being reassigned to the line due to the injury to his hand. He returned to LCC at night to take classes and was promoted to a salaried position in the Time Study Department in 1957/8. He toiled at that job for many years, rarely missing a day of work. Due to his hard work ethic and tenacity with coursework, and had moved into a managers position at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife Doris, son Jeffrey-wife Sharon-grandchildren Scott and Jodi, daughter Christine and son Randy. Both his parents, brother Hugh and sister Elvira also survived him. He was a devoted husband, outstanding father, manical golfer and had planned to finally take the trip around the US, that he had wanted to do as a young man, upon his quickly approaching retirement.
