Birthplace in Alsace is not yet known (1994). In the 1880 U.S. Census of Sand Hill Twp., Scotland Co., MO Martin indicated that he was born in Alsace, as were his parents also. In the 1870 census of Adams Co., IL, his birthplace was given as France. In the 1860 census of Adams Co. his birthplace appears as Germany, and in the 1850 census of Boone Co., KY, it is also listed as Germany. Uncle Bert (Albert Herschel Elick) and Aunt Ethel Elick McFall/Weesner/Rhodes said their grandfather was from a family of vintners, "big fat men who never drank water, only wine." However I doubt the accuracy of this statement, since I have never found a truly fat Elick in my genealogical research. They have all been of medium height and of slim build.
