Notes for John I Lackland, "Softsword" King of England:
[Royalty.FTW]

During his father's reign, John was placed in Ireland as Lord, but was recalled for incompetence. He is described by Langer as "cruel, mean, licentious, faithless, weak of will, without counterbalancing virtues". In a clash of his French overlord, King Philippe, Jahn lost most of his French lands including Normandy.
When his brother, Richard the Lion Hearted, died in 1199, John was selected by the barons to be King against the claim of his young nephew Arthur. John was crowned and he became Arthur's guardian. In 1203, the nephew Arthut died and it was suspected to be by John's order.
John seized the estates in England of Pope Innocent III, and an interdict was laid on England by the Pope in 1208. John was excommunicated in 1209 then deposed in 1213; John did homage to Pope for England & Ireland and the ban was lifted; John was forced by his barons to sign Magna Charta in 121; he died 19 Oct 1216 at Newark Castle, Nottingham Eng and buried in Worcester Cathedral England.
