Notes for Henry I, "Beauclerc" King of England: [Royalty.FTW] Henry became King after his brother, Rufus, termed William II who was unmarried and had no heir. He was known as a passionate & greedy ruffian. Rufus was killed while hunting 2 August 1100 and buried at Westminster Abbey. Henry actually usurped the throne which was rightly his brother's (Duke Robert III). At the will of his father, he had been given cash as his part of the inheritance. Called "an educated, stubborn, prudent leader, a good judge of men" He took over the rule of Normandy after their revolt under his brother Robert. He had Robert held as a prisoner until his death. On his conflict with the Archbishop Anselm over lay investiture, Henry siezed his fiefs and exiled him. Later he reached a compromise and Anselm was reinstated. |
