Notes for Emperor of the West 800-814 CHARLEMAGNE:
[Royalty.FTW]

Charlemagne was said to be a typical German over six feet tall. He was excellent in swimming and had a strong athletic build. Although he understood Greek and spoke Latin, Charlemagne never learned to write.
Charlemagne expanded his lands by conquest. He took Lombardy from Desiderius his former father-in-law, and then took over the rule of Venetia, Istria, Dalmatia and Corsica. After he incorporated Bavaria, he deposed the Duke, Tassilo. It took 18 campaigns lasting 30 years to conquer Saxony. He introduced Christianity by force against pagan opposition. He next defeated the Avars on the lower Danube. He fought against the Moors in Spain where he took Barcelona and created the Spanish March as a border province. He set up Marches or Marks against the Danes, the Wends, the Avars, also in Bohemia, Italy and Spain.
As regards the Pope, he treated him with primacy of honor, but Charlemagne made it clear that he was sovereign even in papal lands. He felt it was his duty to defend the Church and the Pope. He ran the Frankish Empire as a theocracy. Charlemagne took over the supremacy of the Frankish church, settling dogmatic questions, deciding appointments and presiding at synods.
He set up the Palace School to improve ecclesiatical education, but no general system of schools was established. Men of scholarly capability were at the royal court and efforts were made to copy texts.
Charlemagne became the sole ruler of the Empire when his brother Carloman died in 1771. The following year, 772, Charlamgne went to Saxony with his army where he penetrated to the fortress of Ehresburg and force the Saxons to peace. Charlamagne was [etitioned by the new Pope, Adrian I, for help against the invasion of Roman lands by Desiderius, King of the Lombards. Charlemagen with two armies eventually besiged him at Pavia whose inhabitants delivered Desiderius and his family. Charlamagne then became king of the Lombards. In the year 800, on Christmas day, Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the West. The Emperor at Byzantium regarded Charlemagne as a usurper, but by 812 the Eastern Emperor Michael I recognixed Charlemagne's title in the west.
On the 28th of January 814 Charlemagne died after a period of seven days in bed with fever and pleurisy at Aix-la-Chapelle. He was buried the day after he died in full regal dress in a marble sarcophagus under the basilica at Aix-la-Chapelle.
