Lucius Atwater Barnes (son of Isaac "Jr" Barnes and Martha Atwater) was born Dec 04, 1808 in New York, and died Nov 30, 1891 in Pierce County Nebraska. He married Kezia Almira Dexter on Aug 23, 1834 in Kalamazoo County,MI.
Notes for Lucius Atwater Barnes:
There are several conflicting references to Lucius' actual birth date. For this purpose we are using the inscription found on his tombstone listing his age at 83 as of November 30, 1891, making the estimated date of his birth 1807/08. All records show Lucius being born in NY, the town in which he was born has been determined as Camden (Oneida County).
Lucius was 7 to 8 years old when his parents and siblings (George,Carlos and Lester) left Camden NY in January 1816. It is assumed that they settled in Ashtabula (same county),Ohio since the next sibling, Harriet, was born January 17, 1817.
At sometime prior to February 1819 the family settled in Weymouth (Medina County) Ohio where his parents took part in organizing the "First Congregational Church of Medina"(present day name "United Church of Christ of Medina"). The family is still found in 1820 Medina County census with 4 boys and 1 girl.
Lucius attended Western Reserve College in Hudson Ohio but never graduated. It is assumed that the family moved to Hudson since records reflect that Isaac Barnes led a group of families from Hudson to Gull Prairie Michigan in 1830.
There are no records found of Lucius or his family between 1819 and 1830 when the family arrived in Michigan May 10, 1830.
Shortly after arriving in Michigan Lucius became a mail carrier, being the first to carry mail west from Jackson. In 1831 he carried mail from Marshall, via Battlecreek and Gull Prairie, to Schoolcraft. Lucius also drove the first horse team from Gull Prairie to White Pigeon and Niles (land offices) to purchase land for Louis Campau (mentioned later). He was also the first to drive a sleigh into Grand Rapids when there were only two white inhabitants living there.
Lucius was a clerk for Louis Campau, a french trader of Detroit, at the mouth of the Rabbit River. He held this position for over a year between 1831 and 1832. In 1832 he also worked for another trader by the name of Rix Robinson at the junction of Thornapple and Grand Rapids, in Kent County.
Lucius married Keziah Almira Dexter August 23,1837. It is very probable that his father married them. At the time of the marriage Kezia was 16 years old.
Land records show Lucius buying land in section 38 of Castleton November 7,1835.
In 1836 Lucius, with Daniel Jackson were the first to settle in Lumberton / Wayland when they took part in erected a saw mill on Isaac Barnes land. After the mill was operational Daniel managed it for Isaac but shortly thereafter he left his position and Lucius, with his wife Kezia, managed the mill.Lucius often hauled products from the mill to Marshall, Battlecreek and Kalamazoo.
Lucius remained in Lumberton / Wayland and / or surrounding areas until abt 1844 when records show his daughter Martha Roba Barnes being born in Medina Ohio. Lucius is once again found in Wayland Michigan in 1845 (Wayland was organized the year before in 1844).
Lucius was found living in both Ohio and Michigan for several years until he returned to Wayland in 1848 after his parents death. His father's probate record (dated February 1849) shows Lucius in Wayland. Lucius also lived at Green Lake (in Leighton) where he kept hotel for some years before becoming a citizen of Wayland in 1854.
Lucius provided historical information to the authors of "The History of Allegan and Barry Counties, Michigan" published in 1880. Lucius and Kezia are listed as members of the "Pioneer Society of Allegan County". This list has members that joined the society after 1876.
Lucius and Kezia had 10 children. Isaac Carlos Barnes is the next descendant of our family and was the third child born.
In 1881 Lucius and Kezia went to Collbergen (Willow Creek) Peirce County, Nebraska and lived within a few miles of his son Isaac Carlos Barnes. The first land record with Lucius is dated 1888 when he bought land in same area, then two years later in 1890 he sold the land to his son in law George Mathews (husband of Martha Roba).
Lucius and Kezia remained in Pierce county until Lucuis' death November 30,1891. Kezia left Nebraska and went to Washington where she is found buried in 1903. Her two daughters,Tamar Addie and Martha Roba are also found buried in Washington
