Isaac Carlos Barnes (son of Lucius Atwater Barnes and Kezia Almira Dexter) was born Mar 04, 1842 in Gull Prairie, MI, and died Nov 24, 1922 in Willow Creek NB. He married Mary Elizabeth Hutchins on Sep 08, 1867 in MI, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Hutchins and Sarah.

1842 ca. – 1861 Spent most of childhood in Wayland Michigan until age 19.
1861 – ca. 1863 Went to boarding school in Grand Rapids
September 7,1863 – November 11,1865 Soldier of Union Army, 10th Michigan Calvary, Company E (private)
1865 – September 8, 1870 We assume he returned to Wayland MI after discharge and remained there until 1870. During this time he met and married Mary Elizabeth Hutchins. They married September 8, 1867. Their firstborn was Fred O. Barnes on September 7, 1868. Isaac, Mary and Fred were both listed under Lucius’ household in the 1870 census for Allegan County Michigan census. On September 8, 1870 Isaac, Mary and Fred traveled to Norfolk Nebraska in their covered wagon and team of horses.
September 8 – November 20, 1870 The family traveled through Illinois and Iowa to reach Norfolk Nebraska.
November 20,1870 – early 1877 Family settled in Madison County (four miles west of Norfolk) and the next 2 children were born. Edwin T. Barnes, born December 23, 1872 and Melzar Carlos Barnes, born October 2, 1874. There were several hardships suffered by the family during this time to include crop losses (due to grasshopper raids) and blizzards, just to name a few.
Mid 1877 – August 1880 In the summer of 1877 family moved back to Michigan and stayed for 1 ˝ years. During their time in Michigan Lucy May was born (October 22, 1877).Edwin died in 1879. They decided to return to Nebraska in late 1879 but due to lack of funds the family lived in Knoxville Iowa for two years. During this time Sarah Elmira was born ( June 27,1880) In August of 1880,they returned to Nebraska.
Fall 1881 – 1922 In the fall of 1881 Lucius and Kezia came to Nebraska ( Land records show Lucias purchasing land December 10,1888 in section 29, NW,SW of NW quarter, NE,NW section of SW quarter, located approximately 2 miles SW of Isaac’s home and remained close to the family until Lucius’ death in 1891 Isaac sold his land in the fall of 1882 and family moved to Pierce County. Kezia Alvira was born April 28,1883. Land records show that Isaac first purchased land in Section 21(NE,NW of SE quarter / Willow Creek, 80 acres) in November of 1885. House was built 100 yards from north bank of Willow Creek.. From land records we find that Martha Roba and her husband were also in Pierce county in the year 1890, Lucius sold land in section 29 to Martha’s husband, George (11/8/90)
Isaac served as Precinct assessor for eighteen years between 1881 – 1901. He also served as the first postmaster of Colbergen during this time. Colbergen was located within three miles of the homestead.
Until 1919 Isaac and Melzar farmed the land and built several homes and buildings in the area. Melzar built the last home place on the land in 1903 by himself.
(As of May,2004 the house was still standing but in ill repair. It is obvious that the present owners do not live on the land but use the buildings as storage)
In 1919 Isaac fell off a roof and was bedridden until his death, November 24,1922. According to probate records it took almost four years to settle his estate due to the fact that no one was willing and/or able to be executors to his will.
