      96. James Lloyd Woodby, born January 1825 in Carter County Tn. He was the son of 192. Epaphrododus Woodby and 193. Mary Douglas. He married 97. Susannah Honeycutt March 18, 1849.

      97. Susannah Honeycutt, born 1835. She was the daughter of 194. Jacob Honeycutt and 195. Susan Byrd.

Notes for James Lloyd Woodby:

1850 Carter County, TN Census Index, Woodby, James (25), pg 174.

1900 Carter County, TN, 54/54, 19th Dist, Woodby, James b. Jan 1822, 78, widower, b. TN TN TN living w/son Steven and family.

James Lloyd, their older sibling, with children of his own, did not want to fight on either side ( although he did favor the South.) His neighbors were not very friendly toward him about this, and so he and his wife moved across Iron Mountain into Yancey County, N.C. This move followed an incident in which the Union soldiers came looking for James Lloyd to fight fot the North. Susannah had him safely hidden in a dug out area in the farm which was covered with hay. Susannah was pregnant with James Marion at the time and William Isaac was not yet two. The soldiers tried to force Susannah to tell them where James Lloyd was hidden. During the struggle one of the soldiers kicked Susannah. When James Marion was born, he had one black eye and one brown eye. Susannah believed that being kicked by the soldier caused the color change in the eyes.

James Lloyd sold his cow and wagon load of salt ( in order to raise money for his move over the mountain and into NC).

Charlie Byrd [see William Kimsey Byrd in Vol I, at child #1]; a neighbor on Jacks Creek and James Lloyd went together and purchsed 1200 acres at .25 and acre on a tributary of Jacks Creek (now called Byrd Branch, with the upper half known as Woodby Mountain.)

James Lloyd is said to have been quiet and sickly. He did manage to build a log cabin near a natural spring and planted an apple orchard.

Even after the war was over, the trouble continued. It is said that renegade Union troops camped at Rock Creek (present Mitchell Co) They came through Jacks Creek looting and plundering. They killed a man by the name of Bailey (?) (The editor wonders if this was Edward ("Neddie") Bailey, whom family tradition says died "during the civil war." See under Martha (Bailey) McIntosh)

People had tied their cattle and belongings during this time. A Honeycutt man (?) hid out on Jacks Creek and the Union soldiers burned his house. He came over the mountain to warn James Lloyd and the others that the renegades were coming up Byrd Branch Road. The men, including James Lloyd, ambushed the renegades and killed two of them. The renegades took the dead men and left the area never to return. (The editor wonders if this is the same incident during which Charles Avery (the "Charlie" mentioned just above) Byrds son, William Jackson Byrd, a wounded Confederate veteran, hid behind a tree on Byr Branch and shot dead one of a group of men who were riding along on a mission of plundering.)

James Lloyd Woodby (#III) is buried in the Woodby Mountain Cemetary
