Notes for William Woodby:
William appears in "Goodspeeds History of Johnson County"; and "Reminiscences of Carter County". He served with Tiptons Company in the Revolution, changed his name to WIDBY about 1790, and moved to Wayne Co, Kentucky about 1835 with his wife and 5 of his children. He was married to ELIZABETH WILSON; died about 1847 in Tenn. Appears in Johnson County will index book #1 1837-1884, page 36. executor ALFRED WIDBY. Also appears on the 1796 Carter Co Tax List , 1830 Carter Co census, and land records.


Excerpt from Goodspeed's History: Among the settlers on the Laurel were James Keys, Charles Anderson and the Wills. Of the remaining settlers of the county prior to 1800 many have been forgotten, while the names of others' are'perpetuated by their descendauts. A few only can be enumerated here. These were Peter and John Cain, Benjamin and Daniel Cuthbert, Peter Snyder, Abraham Dorson and Joseph Sewell, Joseph, John and Garland Wilson, Robert and John Walters, William Woodby (now Widby), William Netherly and Anthony and William Fisher.

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF

WILLIAM WIDBY, Deceased

IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN: I, William Widby do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making all other wills by me at any time made.

FIRST, I direct that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of my moneys that I may die possessed of or may first come into the hands of my Executor.

SECONDLY: I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas Widby and Tapley Widby to each five Dollars.

THIRDLY: I give and bequeath to my son Alfred Widby one hundred and fifty dollars and also the additional sum of three hundred dollars for money paid for me, and one horse and other services rendered by him for me and also another additional sum of two hundred and fifty dollars to my son Alfred Widby.

FOURTHLY: I give and bequeath to my son, William Simpson Widby, all my tract or parcel of land where I now live and possess, and,

FIFTHLY: I give each of my daughters to wit: Dicy Davis, Nancy Wallis, Elizabeth Hockaday, Anna Jenkins, and Hiley Shuffield, the sum of seventy five dollars each, and

LASTLY: I desire that my slaves be kept amongst my heirs if they can agree, and if not, for my son Alfred Widby, whom I appoint and nominate my Executor to sell all of them that he cant keep, himself at private and have six months after my death to make sale in, and all those that are sold if any, should be, should go to one Martin, if my Executor deem it expedient and if all agree and none of my slaves is not sold, I want my black woman, Judah to have her choice which one to go to and that one to pay over to the balance the amount above its part.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I do to this my Will, set my hand and seal this 27th day of December, 1845.
