IRGINIA MAE WOODBY:

Virginia Conrad, 85, died peacefully at Pilgram Haven Nursing Home in Los Altos after a short battle with cancer. She leaves a legacy to her family and friends of a life filled with wit, energy, compassion and love. Virginia was born on a farm in Beaverton, Michigan, the only daughter of Fred and Grace Woodby along with three brothers. Virginia attended Central Michigan State College for a year, then graduated from Hurley Hospital School of Nursing with a R.N. and worked at the University of Michigan Hospital. She moved to Chicago in 1939 and became an American Airline stewardess where she met her husband of 61 years, Ernest Conrad, an American Airlines pilot. She is survived by her husband, her sons, Ernest, Jr. and Brian, her grandson, Korbin, her daughter-in-law, Lila, her brother, Don Woodby and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She found great joy in attending her annual family reunions for the last 45 years. After living in the Chicago area for 18 years, Virginia and her family moved to Los Altos Hills in 1957, where she was an active member of the community all her life. In 1952, she was elected first national president of the International Kiwi Club, a service and social organization of retired American Airline flight attendants. She was a founder and dedicated supporter of the Kiwi Club for 50 years, and just attended the 25th bi-annual national convention in Dallas, Texas in April 2002, where she was honored as the first president. Virginia's effortless abiliy to make all feel welcome made the Conrad home a "second home" to friends and relatives around the the world. After Virginia's husband retired in 1972, they traveled extensively all over the world on cruises and tours and later with their family for Christmas and other holiday vacations. Virginia's interests were eclectic: oil painting, gardening, travel, community clubs, and an energetic zest for living life to the fullest. She touched the lives and hearts of all she knew and met and will be forever missed.
