CHARLIE ROACH INSTANTLY KILLED
By Lightning Last Friday AfternoonMules He Drove Also KilledWas
on Way Home
Charlie Roach, well known to the people of Walhalla and vicinity, and especially
in the upper section of the county where he was born and raised, met death in
a tragic manner last Friday
Afternoon about 5 oclock while on his way from Seneca to the Return section
of the county, where he had lived for the past two or three years.
Mr. Roach was driving a double team of mules, and had just taken note of a cloud
overhead which gave promise of a storm in that locality. He urged his mules to
a faster speed, and a man pulling fodder in a nearby field stated that he noticed
the man in the wagon look up into the sky and almost instantly there was an awful
crash of thunder and a flash of lightning-it was but an instant. Where Mr. Roach
and his team had been moving with animation there was nothing but stillness and
death. The bolt appears to have made a direct stroke on the wagon, the driver
and the team. Mr. Roach was prostrate, and it is certain that he never knew what
had happened. The mules lay in the road, each falling away from the tongue that
separated them in their work. It is said that Mr. Roachs shoes were both
split open, and that his skull was fractured. His hat was slit open, it is said,
as with a sharp knife. Neighbors soon took the prostrate form of the unfortunate
man to the nearest house, where it was held until relatives could be notified.
The accident occurred in the road almost in front of the home of Molly Powell.
Mr. Roach was a son of Baxter Roach and was a native of this county, resident
for many years in the Holly Springs section. He is survived by his second wife
and five or six children, who have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
The remains were interred on Sunday morning.
