Lottie Cribb (daughter of Robert (Bob) Lester Cribb and Margaret Maggie Goude) was born August 09, 1887, and died April 14, 1984. She married (1) Harvey Jerial Rowe. She married (2) Samuel Benjamin Rawls on March 28, 1917.
Notes for Lottie Cribb:
Following are notes sent to me by Ben Rawls, son of Mitchell Rawls & Bernice Earline Williams Rawls and grandson of Samuel Benjamin Rawls & Lottie Cribb Rawls:
Sometime between the death of Samuel Benjamin's wife Sarah Goude Rawls in 1910 and 1915, Samuel started to visit my grandmother, Lottie Ann Cribb. Samuel told Robert Lester Cribb that he wanted to marry Lottie. In order for Samuel to get to Lottie's home, he had to ride his mule from Petersfield. When he reached the old millpond, he would tie his mule to a tree, take off his clothes, swim to the other side with his clothes above the water, get dressed and walk on to Lottie's.
When asked how long she knew Samuel Benjamin, grandmother Lottie said, "I knowed him a long time. When my mama died he told somebody he was going to ask Pa for me and something told him to wait and later he could come and get me. When my mama died Adria wasn't weaned. I don't know how old I was when my mama died. Mr. Rawls came and got me like he had planned. He was good to me. Yes sir, he was good to me." She said there was two kinds of love and explained. "I love Mitchell and Sammie better than I do Mr. Rawls. But I said there are two kinds of love."
When asked if she and my grandfather ever went anywhere together before they were married my grandmother Lottie said, "No we didn't go anywhere together. He courted me while I was cooking supper. One evening Samuel Benjamin came in the kitchen where we had a coffee mill up on the wall. I was parching coffee when he came in. He took both of my hands, folded them back and knocked the coffee mill over. Coffee was spilled everywhere. He was just about ready to take off and I said you spilled the coffee and you are going to clean it up. He said he would clean it up and he took the broom and did. We put the coffee back in the pan. He told me I had better wash his hands. He said he cleaned the coffee up for me and I had to wash his hands. I said, ' Well come on and I will wash your hands'. And I washed his hands. "
Samuel Benjamin Rawls and Lottie Cribb were married on March 28, 1917 and lived near Petersfield. My grandfather was about to turn 60 years old and had a daughter, Agnes Cornelia, about the same age as my grandmother Lottie who was 34. Grandmother Lottie said, "I never have felt like a mother-in-law to Agnes. I was like a sister to her." 1917 was the "coldest" year with an average recorded temperature across the USA of 50.7 degrees.
This is how my grandmother, Lottie, described where they lived. "It was a pole house, I believe. We had two rooms. We had a bedroom and a kitchen when Mitchell and Sammie were born. The kitchen had a dirt floor. I cooked in a dirt floor kitchen. I cooked on a wood stove. I busted the wood and I could do a good job. I told Sammie when he got a heater, I said Sammie I said if you had all the wood I ever cut, you wouldn't have to cut no wood to burn in the heater. He said, "I know it Mama."
My Dad, his mother and Uncle Sammie moved from Robert Lester Cribb's to Sy Cribb's in 1929. While they were living here, Ma Ma Lottie Cribb Rawls met Harvey J. Rowe. Uncle Jim Rowe was dating Mabel Miller at that time and his dad, Harvey, came with him to visit at Sy Cribb's. Later they married and moved to Carver's Bay in 1929. Harvey and Lottie's marriage was a "God send". Harvey's children didn't have a mother and Lottie's didn't have a father. It turned out to be a great thing for both families.
