Robert (Bob) Lester Cribb (son of Frank G. Cribb and Mary Ann McKnight) was born January 11, 1852, and died October 29, 1935. He married (1) Margaret Maggie Goude. He married (2) Della Jane Powers.
Notes for Robert (Bob) Lester Cribb:
Following are notes I received from Ben Rawls, son of Mitchell & Bernice Rawls, and grandson of Lottie Cribb Rawls & Samuel Benjamin Rawls:
The Cribb family name originated in Oxfordshire in England. The Cribb family traces their ancestral roots back to Norman origins. John Cribb and his wife Elizabeth came from someplace near London, England, in 1717. There was also a Thomas Cribb and his wife Elizabeth in the Georgetown area at about this time. I haven't found any info to confirm that Thomas was either a son or brother of John's yet. Leanardo Andrea, a professional genealogist, noted that John and Thomas were the first Cribb men to settle in the Georgetown area in 1717. When Leanardo Andrea died he donated all his records and files to the Mormon Church. Records would seem to indicate that in the early 1800's that many Cribb families moved from the Georgetown area, near Andrews, to different parts of Marion County, SC, Columbus County, NC. and to Georgia.
I know that there were two Cribbs that came over on the boat in 1783. Thomas and John Cribb, (from England) were in Georgetown County. (The 1800 census of Georgetown District lists Thomas Cribb, Francis Cribb, John Cribb, Sr. and John Cribb, Jr.). The Mormons think that they migrated north to Marion, Dillon, McColl and all of northern South Carolina. I haven't found the connection to Frank G. Cribb, my second great grandfather, who was born in 1809 three years after Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific coast. Frank Cribb's wife, Mary Ann McKnight, my second great grandmother, was born in 1813.
Based on the 1880 cnesus, Robert Lester Cribb was 28 and a farmer. His wife, Margaret Maggie Goude, was 25 and listed as a housekeeper. Agnes Jane was 3 and Gilbert Johnson was 2. Robert's mother Mary Ann McKnight was 66 and lived with them as her husband Frank G. Cribb had died. John Phillips lived with them, was 22 and worked in turpentine.
Maggie Goude, my great grandmother, died about 1895. My grandmother Lottie was less than 10 when she died. Robert Lester Cribb, my great grandfather, married Della Jane Powers by 1896. Della was a midwife and had a horse and buggy that she used to care for the sick in the area. There was no doctor within ten miles and by horse and buggy it took doctor Johnson a long time to get to the area. Della was actively involved in the church. She and Robert Tanner started the Center Baptist Church. Della was a heavy-set woman. She was clever and as good as any woman could be. She was a good cook and was a big help to Robert in tending his business.
My grandmother Lottie described her father's, Robert L. Cribb's farm. "My daddy planted corn and cotton, sweet potatoes, sugar cane. I know one time he carried me to the field to drop corn and I said Pa how do you want me to drop it? He said drop it in every hole you see. When I decided to drop it, I dropped it in the mule tracks, too. We had corn everywhere."
My great grandfather, Robert Lester Cribb, was a medium sized man and always wore a beard. He had a lot of horses and cows on his farm. He was known as a fair man. He was friendly and got along well with most people. He didn't attend church. He took a drink of whiskey from time to time but was never seen drunk. He was a hard worker and worked most all of the time. He had his boys do the plowing but he did most everything else. He wasn't fond of hunting and fishing. He wasn't a sportsman he enjoyed farming. Robert did have trouble with Neil Miller over the property line that divided their farms. Interestingly, Robert's daughter-my grandmother Lottie Cribb Rowe-was married to Harvey J. Rowe and they were sharecropping with Neil Miller. A little later, Harvey's daughter-my Aunt Cornelia-married Neil Miller's son J.D. Miller. That must have made for some interesting conflicts.
Grandmother Lottie said she went to school at Good Hope and that they lived close enough for her to come back home for dinner at recess.
My paternal great grandmother, Margaret Maggie Goude Cribb died in 1895. Robert Lester married Della in about 1896. Shortly after great grandfather Robert married Della she had a dream that Robert's first wife, Maggie, told her there was money she had hidden in the trunk that could be used to buy clothes for the children. Della said when she awoke she opened the trunk and found the money.
My great grandfather, Robert Lester Cribb, began to acquire tracts of land in 1906. He bought 130 acres from George Bruerton for $125 on February 17, 1906. Robert Lester also bought land from John Powers on June 25th and from William Spivey on July 11, 1906.
The 13th census of the USA was taken on April 15,1910. The 1910 census had Robert L. Cribb, my paternal great grandfather, listed as being 58, his second wife Della Powers was listed as "Addilla" and 35, my paternal grandmother Lottie Ann was listed as 22, Florrie was 19, Adria was 17,Joseph Doar was 12, Maggie was 10, John was 7, Mary was 5, Hildebrand was 3 and Edward was 1. There were shown as living in the Carver's Bay Township. Robert Lester Cribb bought another tract of land from Mary Ann Flowers on March 16, 1914.
Robert Lester Cribb transferred 227 acres of land to his wife, Della, and sons, Hildebrand, Josiah, Woodrow, Eddie and Reed, on December 15, 1917. This land was bounded by property owned by John I. Williams on the east, and S.B. Poston, R.B. Avant, and Neal Miller. It is recorded in Book N-1 on page 285.
