Notes for Robert "Mitchell" Rawls:
Following are notes I received from Ben Rawls, son of Mitchell & Bernice Rawls, and grandson of Lottie Cribb Rawls & Samuel Benjamin Rawls:
My Dad was born near Petersfield in Georgetown County on what is now called the "Carrie Huggins Rawls Farm" on March 16, 1918. My Rawls grandparents lived there until my grandfather died in 1925. Dad was seven and Uncle Sammie was five. His dad was about 61 years old when he was born. He was named for Robert Lester Cribb, his grandfather and Mitchell Spivey, a lawyer in Hemingway. The midwife was Della Jane Powers Cribb, Robert Lester Cribb's second wife. They lived in a log home that had two rooms, a kitchen with a wood-burning stove on a dirt floor and a bedroom. My grandmother, Lottie, could chop wood as good as any man in her time.
This is how my grandmother, Lottie, described where they lived. "It was a pole house, I believe. We had two rooms. We had a bedroom and a kitchen when Mitchell and Sammie were born. The kitchen had a dirt floor. I cooked in a dirt floor kitchen. I cooked on a wood stove. I busted the wood and I could do a good job. I told Sammie when he got a heater, I said Sammie I said if you had all the wood I ever cut, you wouldn't have to cut no wood to burn in the heater. He said, "I know it Mama."
My Dad, his mother and Uncle Sammie moved from Robert Lester Cribb's to Sy Cribb's in 1929. Sy and his wife Viola had adopted a son, James Clarence and called J. C., from Ollie and Gertie Moore Cribb. J.C. was a year younger than Sammie. While they were living here, Ma Ma Lottie Cribb Rawls met Harvey J. Rowe. Uncle Jim Rowe was dating Mabel Miller at that time and his dad, Harvey, came with him to visit at Sy Cribb's. Later they married and moved to Carver's Bay in 1929. Harvey and Lottie's marriage was a "God send". Harvey's children didn't have a mother and Lottie's didn't have a father. It turned out to be a great thing for both families.
Children of Robert "Mitchell" Rawls and Bernice Earline Williams are:
- Benjamin Mitchell Rawls, b. 1940.
- Lillian Rawls, b. 1941, d. December 27, 1941.
- Robert Murry Rawls, b. 1943.
- Bonnette Elaine Rawls, b. 1947.
