FOURTEENTH GENERATION
762. James Stokes TEAGUE
(1) was born in Feb 1876 in Texas.
He died on Jun 13 1925 in Marathon, Texas. He was buried in Marathon, Texas.
Postmaster of Shannon, Texas from 21 Jul 1909 to 1 Feb 1912.
Moved to Boquillas in the Big Bend area after being diagnosed with Tuberculosis.
Apparently married a Mexican girl and had at least one more child.
Jimmy ran a general store, first in Boquillas, then in Marathon, Texas. He also
made and sold wax to other companies.
From Panther Junction you can drive southeast toward the Rio Grande's Boquillas
Canyon. Boquillas Canyon is one of the Rio Grande's three grandest canyons here
in the park. It was cut through the Sierra del Carmen and is the longest of Big
Bend's famous gorges. Across the river is the Mexican village of Boquillas.
The original Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila, Mexico, was established in 1896
with the discovery of lead-silver deposits called the Minas Ricas in the nearby
Sierra del Carmen. In 1902, the Rio Grande flooded and destroyed the town. It
was relocated to its present site on higher ground in 1903. Approximately 25
families live in the village, which is governed by a town commissioner who works
through and with a council composed of the heads of all the families.
Tourism is now the most important economic factor in Boquillas. Many people still
gather and process the candelilla plant for its high quality wax. This activity
dates back to 1936. Most of the wax is sent to Cuatrocienegas, Coahuila, for
further processing and sale. Most, however, makes its way into the United States.
